When I say that I mean ideologies fracturing and reforming into different shapes. I don't think the US or any other country is actually going to balkanize, outside of rare situations like perhaps Quebec or Scotland with an already existing and separate nationality.
As the political system begins to fail, the people currently in power will try harder and harder to point fingers elsewhere. When that no longer works other people in slightly lesser seats of power will tear them apart and begin creating new organizations. It may be in the form of political parties, companies, websites, etc.
The point is that what is now whole is going to slowly and then suddenly fall apart and synthesize into something new.
It may be better or worse than what we have now, or recently had, but that is something so unpredictable that it's almost pointless to speculate about. The cards will fall as they should.
